According to William Joseph Long, duration of the Romantic period was 1800-1850. Romantic Age mostly known as William Wordsworth's age. After that the publication of "Lyrical Ballads" Romantic Age was started. Lyrical Ballads published in the year 1798. The Lyrical Ballads published by most prominent writers William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

This period has considered as a most innovative period of imagination, beauty of nature and also a period of creative writing in history of English Literature. During this period people were try to express their visions in a creative manner. The most famous quote by William Wordsworth,

"Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher."

Romanticism was the revival of new thoughts, art, music and feelings & emotions. This Romantic Age conflict with the new idea of revolution in time. This Age gave a way to think on an originality, love for passion, individualism, nature, the power of imagination, equality, creative manner, education and many more valuable things. The Romantic Age was also known as the age of poetry, nature, imagination, creativity and visualization. The Romantic Age was called as a an age of Revolution.

Characteristics of Romanticism :-

There are many interesting characteristics of Romanticism. As we discuss in detail step by step.


1. Power of Imagination :-

Imagination is a way of creativity. In Romantic Era William Wordsworth, S.T Coleridge, keats, Lord Byron, etc. They all are trying to convert imagination into the reality. At that time Such kind of imagination was the emphasize the story of new revolution. They believed that the imagination is a power to made our own world. Samuel Taylor Coleridge think about the imagination,

"Imagination has the metaphysical power of unifying all elements ."

2. Beauty of Nature :-

During that time Nature was a symbol of connection with the God. William Wordsworth said that the, 

'I feel better when I'm with nature.'

William Wordsworth in his all works discussed about the nature and it's beauty. William Wordsworth known as a Romantic Poet who believed in the inherent beauty and greatness of nature. Nature was playing the central role in poems. Nature gave us to peace of mind. William Wordsworth wrote fabulous poems that represents to nature. Here, one example like "The Daffodils" and it was published in 1807. This poem is fulfilled with beauty of nature.




3. Focus on Individualism & Spirituality :-

During this age individualism was playing the most important role in English Literature. The Romantic poets believed that the any or each person had a own voice, own thoughts, and own perspective. They gave importance to self-expression and rejected the idea of conformity. They tried to spread spirituality in each & every comon men and tried to be simple as simple that.

4. Emphasis on Passion & Emotion :-

In the romantic age emphasized the emotions over the reason. The passion emphasized the working space and explored the valuable talent to history of english literature. Romantic poets believed that the emotions were a powerful inspiration that could inspire innovation and imagination. As a result, poets wrote the poems and through the poems that expressed feelings of love, passion, creative thinking and much more things.

5. Beauty of the Poems :-

Poems became a prominent figure of this Romantic Era. Poems create a new version of thinking process, new ideas, new creativity, new vocabulary, imagination. Poets used the such kind of supernatural elements in their poems. Poems started the new journey of revolution. Poems are the example of creative writing. In poems poets used the various types of structure, stanza, rhyming words and much more aspects. Poets believed in the source of inspiration. According to John Keats,

"Poetry should be great and unobtrusive, a thing which enters into one's soul, and does not startle it or amaze it with itself, but with its subject."

We can say that the pride of the age in the poetry of William Scott, William Wordsworth, S.T Coleridge, John Keats, Lord Byron, P.B Shelley, Moore and Robert Southey.


6. Romantic Enthusiasm :-


The literature developed a new creative spirit during that time. At that time shows itself in the poetry of William Wordsworth, John Keats, Lord Byron, S.T Coleridge, Shelley and many more. On the other side in the prose of William Scott, Jane Austen, Charles Lamb and De Quincey an amazing group of writers, whose genius has caused their age to be known as the second creative period of our literature. After sometime Wordsworth, fired with political enthusiasm, at that time he could write,

"Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive but to be young was very heaven."

We can see, the independence expressed by Coleridge in his works of art "Kubla Khan" and second "The Ancient Mariner".

7. Education & Politics :-

During this age education was the piller of any kind of knowledge. Education was the important features during this age. Education was the spontaneous power of creative ideology. Education gave a way to think an out side of the box. As well as Politics was the powerful background during this age. In this age politics was top of the world, like now days.

8. Art, Painting and Music :-

In Romantic Era artists tried to made paintings with the used of water colours. Painters began experimenting with water colours. Romantic painters mainly painted landscapes paintings, by using the super natural power to capture the realistic moments. For E.x...


Creative art explored by this age of Romanticism. Art was a sensibility of thinking power. Art was the connected with large numbers of creativity and visualization.



We can say that the Music is the peace of mind. Music has its own existence during that time. Music connected with people and people feel free to listening and dancing on music. In this age we can saw the classical fellow touched the higher place. And through the music touched in our inner sense. During this age music became a leading point.




9. Women as Novelist :-

This called very great moment in literature. After that the French Revolution everyone has a chance to speak, write and free to do anything want to do. Gave a chance to women as well to write their own thoughts, speak their own ideas and freedom for writing. According to information of W.J Long's book, Women is naturally more than man, it may well be that the spirit of this emotional age attracted her, and gave her the opportunity to express herself in literature.

10. An Age of Inspiration :-

Poet's works of art inspired by each & everyone to create their own works of art and work on Passion. In any kind of field everyone has need to going through the inspiration. In this age inspiration was the only path to create something new by own existence. All poets by their own strength gave remarkable contribution in this age. It's all about called inspiration.

Romanticism was a great movement of creativity, emotion, and nature. Romanticism was the age of new atmosphere in idealism and imagination. This age called the revival of new world. One most famous quote like,
"We will walk with our own feet
We will work with our own hands,
We will speak with our own minds."

In this age free to expressed everything like feelings, emotions, thoughts, works, imagination, etc. Romanticism was the artistic and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of 18th century.
