Margarita With a Straw (Movie Review)

'Margarita With A Straw' (Movie Review)

Introduction :-
"Margarita With A Straw", is a groundbreaking film. This film becomes famous and interesting because of its making, storytelling, and visual arts. This movie is directed by Shonali Bose. This movie released in the year of 2015. This movie delves into the themes like, disability and sexuality, family & support, self-discovery and many more.

“When life hands you lemons, you can be bitter and sour or you can make a yummy Margarita with them and raise a toast!” Shonali Bose speaks to the essence of her film. This movie focuses more on strength, talent, happiness, and the essential beauty of living life than on disability and any pain. This movie also explore the idea of living life with full of joy and prosperity, life is about to celebrate not about to regret.

Storyline :-
Laila is followed in the movie as she works through the difficulties of identity, love, and life. After moving to New York for her further study, Laila's life drastically changes from her initial supportive family life in Delhi. She meets new people and experiences here that alter her perspective and help her come to terms with who she is. A turning point in her journey is her friendship and eventual romantic engagement with Sayani Gupta's portrayal of blind campaigner Khanum, which highlights the film's fundamental investigation of sexuality and love beyond physical constraints.

Themes :-

Disability and Sexuality :-
Disability is not a weakness, but it is power to create something unique with extensive talent. Laila's cerebral palsy is shown in the movie as one part of her complex personality rather than as a defining characteristic. It pushes for a more inclusive definition of normalcy and contests societal views about disability. This movie teaches us that life is a beautiful journey and celebrating things, but we should not feel determined by disability.

Family & Support :-
Family heals the pain and give essential warmness of love, strength, motivation, and power to fight with problems and difficulties of life. The nuances of Laila's family, especially her bond with her mother (played by Revathi), are also masterfully shown in the movie. Their loving but sometimes tense relationship serves as a reminder of how crucial family support is to a person's growth.

Self-discovery :-
The theme of Laila's pursuit of independence keeps coming up. Her decision to relocate to New York represents her wish to reject familial and societal expectations and pursue acceptance on her own terms. Laila lives with herself and explores her own company with experience and motifs.

Performance :-
Kalki Koechlin, who played the role of Laila, gave her tremendous job to that role and wonderfully elaborated her way of acting. She had awakened the curiosity of the audience to watch and observe some hidden meaning in her actions. I must say that about her acting, it's immersion of the of the audience into the flow of observation and storytelling. The other characters also play a vital role in this movie, such as the mother character played by Shubhangini (Revathi), who was very interesting and notable for respecting the mother's unconditional love towards child and occasional frustration of a parent supporting a child with special needs. All the characters of this film keep you captivated from the beginning till the end.

Direction and Cinematography :-
The sensitive and realistic directing of Shonali Bose deserves praise. She skillfully handles the film's delicate topics without indulging in sensationalism, striking a balance between sensitivity and emotional depth. The narrative is enhanced by Anne Misawa's cinematography, which portrays the lively spirit of Delhi and the fast-paced vitality of New York while illustrating Laila's internal and exterior changes.
